Five Ways to Foster a Child’s Imagination

Fostering a Child’s Imagination

Children are wondrous, imaginative and creative creatures at heart! However, the new digital age has children as young as three-years-old glued to their parents iPad. Constantly putting digital devices in front of our children that stifle their creativity, could be stunting their creative process. It can also be hard to find ways to foster a child’s creative side when you are knee deep in the day-to-day responsibilities of being a parent.

However awakening a child’s imagination is not nearly as hard as you might think.

Idea #1: Provide a Child With Creative Supplies

FingerpaintCrayons, markers, and plain white paper are a pretty standard tools for entertaining children. If they don’t know what to draw or color, give them a couple ideas. If there are several children drawing, then make it a contest. If you have the area and can accommodate finger painting, then put on the old t-shirts and let the kids get messy. Children love finger paint! They perform the work, and because they put their hands directly to the paper, they become a part of the finished artwork.

Other great creative tools include sponges and cotton swabs. It’s amazing what children can make out of cloud-like shapes. Children also like gluing feathers on their artwork and creatively painting paper towel dowels. Using unusual tools will help push children to think in new and strongly creative ways.
