Idea #2 – Five Ways to Foster a Child’s Imagination

Idea #2:  Hand Your Kid a Box

Icons by http://dryicons.comIt’s puzzling that you can spend high dollars on toys and then find your child prefers playing with a shoebox or cardboard box.  Don’t be frustrated by that.  Creative thinkers can make something exquisite from something very simple and plain. Do you remember Michelangelo, the Italian sculptor, painter, architect, poet, and engineer of the Renaissance period?  He once said, “I saw the angel in the marble and carved until I set him free.”

Kids just love boxes, big or small. It doesn’t matter. For a few weeks, collect all of the cardboard boxes you can find. Then provide your child with some stickers, markers, construction paper and if you’re feeling particularly bold, finger paint. Don’t give your child any creative instructions. Just step back and watch them work! Maybe they’ll build a castle or a fictitious animal. They might just build something that is unidentifiable except by them, but if they had fun and were creative, that’s all that matters.
